With the 2012 Olympics underway, the world is watching as competitors
from near and far gather to compete for a gold medal, the single
highest honor many athletes hope to achieve.
One Olympic story known the world over is that of Eric Liddell, made famous by the film Chariots of Fire.
Although Eric was favored to win the 100-meter dash in the Paris
Olympics of 1924, he withdrew from the race rather than compete on a
Sunday which was his Sabbath Day. He went on to a surprising, and record-setting, win in the
400-meter race.
A true champion who refused to compromise his values, Liddell's
Olympic story is just the beginning of his testimony. He went on to
serve as a missionary to China where he lived until his death in 1945.
He shared his own daily practice of prayer and discipleship in The Disciplines of the Christian Life, now considered by many to be a classic. In his book about spiritual disciplines, he outlines his own pattern for
living which has as its foundation a daily Bible reading plan.
